2007 Projects

Anglesey Wreck Diving & Research

The branch is actively involved in the research of two ship wrecks located off the North coast of Anglesey. Research by Chris Holden and Nigel Cossons, and information gained from the diving organised by Justin Owen, has been used to assess the identities of these two wrecks. The branch has so far had two articles about the research printed in the local press.

In 2007 we will be revisiting both of the sites to carry out further research on the two vessels. Our aims are to further map 'Site #1' and investigate the possibilities of addition wreckage and debris fields in the vicinity. At 'Site #2' we intend to video tape the wreck to help look for identifying marks and obvious indications that may have led to her sinking. We also intend to record the dimensions of the wreck to confirm her identity against the ships blueprints.

'Site #1' is located in 30m of water and is accessible to the majority of members within the Branch. Long slack water times mean this wreck is ideally suited to diving with nitrox in order to extend bottom times. It is also an ideal dive to build up skills and experience for those members looking to take part in more adventurous and/or technical diving.

'Site #2' is located in 40m of water and is therefore a more challenging dive - though the structure of the wreck is accessible at 35m so is still open to experienced Sport Divers. Careful gas and decompression planning is required in order to get the most from this dive.

The Essential Underwater Guide to North Wales - Volume II

Chris Holden will be completing the diving and research required in order to complete the second volume of his Essential Underwater Guide to North Wales. Once again members will have the opportunity to accompany Chris on a selection of dives from wrecks to reefs and drifts. An excellent opportunity to learn from one of the Branch's most experienced members and maybe get yourself in the book!

Beach Watch

Our very own "Coastal Ranger" Jean Evans will be organising a number of beach clean up days during 2007. As well as doing our bit for the environment it also gives valuable positive publicity to the branch.
